Moving to the Next Chapter

Flathead County remains one of the lowest staffed counties in the state despite rapid population growth. As Sheriff, I will continue working to responsibly increase staffing while balancing the impact on taxpayers.

We have already made significant progress by:

• Implementing online reporting to streamline services
• Adjusting shifts for improved coverage
• Creating full-time coroner positions to free deputies for patrol and investigations
• Securing grant funding for positions like traffic enforcement and School Resource Officers

While we have taken dramatic steps forward, more must be done to ensure response times and service levels keep pace with growth. I will continue pursuing grant opportunities, community partnerships, and operational efficiencies to meet this demand.

Law enforcement has increasingly been placed on the front lines of a growing mental health crisis due to gaps in services.

I will continue working with community partners to expand better solutions for individuals struggling with mental health challenges. Through cooperation and innovation, we have embedded mental health responders alongside law enforcement — a major step forward in delivering more compassionate and effective care.

We must continue strengthening these partnerships to ensure the right response for those in need.

For over 20 years, a new detention center has been discussed in this county. Now, we are moving forward.

Over the next 30 months, I will work with staff, community members, and industry experts to ensure we build a facility that is:

• Cost-effective and responsible with taxpayer dollars
• Safe for staff and inmates
• Designed for long-term durability and future expansion
• Large enough to double current capacity and improve accountability

This facility will enhance public safety while providing a safer and more professional working environment for our staff.

Public safety must evolve with changing threats and technology.

We will continue investing in:

• Advanced investigative tools, including cell phone forensics
• Electronic search warrants and modern policy software
• Artificial intelligence (AI) training and applications
• Expanded drone capabilities and specialized equipment
• Continued development of tactical teams, K9, Search and Rescue, and future equine teams

We will also enhance data-driven strategies to proactively target high-crime areas while ensuring funding decisions remain responsible and balanced.

Supporting our staff is about more than pay, it is about sustainability.

We must ensure those who serve can afford to live in the communities they protect and remain competitive with surrounding agencies. That includes:

• Competitive compensation
• Ongoing training and modern equipment
• Mental, physical, and financial wellness support
• Leadership development and career growth

From detention to patrol, from administration to animal control — our people are our greatest asset. Retaining and investing in them is critical to long-term success.

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office depends on our professional volunteers — including the Sheriff’s Posse, Reserves, and Search and Rescue.

These organizations have supported this county for over 80 years.

Having served alongside them, I understand their value. I will continue investing in their training, equipment, and development to ensure they remain strong partners in protecting our community.
